In a compelling session to a full house, (retired) Major-General Fergus (Gus) McLachlan, of PeopleScape, drew upon his amazing military career to apply leadership parallels to a contemporary (and disrupted) business context.
Gus shared insights on leaders who have, through their own positivity, even-temperedness and work ethic, been able to unlock the ‘discretionary potential effort’ of staff members who may otherwise withhold that effort.
Centralised versus decentralised models of leadership were considered, whilst the use of ‘trusted agents’ was explored as a means of ensuring leaders can get across their organisation (and so ensure a leader is able to ‘stand beside’ the biggest problem of an organisation at the right moment).
We look forward to further opportunities for Gus to elaborate on his fascinating experiences of human nature, the military and leadership, and how these apply within the business workforce.
