November Topic: Mock Trial – Unfair Dismissal – with BAL Lawyers Litigation & Dispute Resolution Team.

By popular demand, we will run a mock trial of an unfair dismissal proceeding before the Fair Work Commission.  If you have never participated in a mock trial before (and even if you have) this is an event not to be missed!  It will be a lot of fun and a great way to learn about how legal systems play out in forums such as the Fair Work Commission, or other courts and tribunals.

How it works:

The audience will view the case unfold, largely as it would unfold in real life.  The case will be heard before a (mock) Commissioner and solicitors representing each side.  How it plays out on the day will be contingent on audience’s contributions and involvement.

Audience members interested in being involved can be witnesses to the case, and give evidence in the proceeding.  Each mock character will be given a set of key facts that they witnesses, with some behavioural guides that may inform their reactions.  The solicitors appearing will have limited insight to the character’s motives, so where the case may go is anyone’s guess.

The characters:

  1. A (mock) FWC Commissioner – to played by Ian Meagher, Director – BAL Lawyers Litigation & Dispute Resolution team
  2. A solicitor for the applicant and respondent; and
  3. Witnesses to the case – to be played by willing audience members.
